The Teacher’s Teacher & the Student’s Student, Simon Schmid

Olivier is everything but a classical coach. On the one hand, he is your teacher, obviously, but on the other hand, he is your student as well. He is curious about the challenges you face. He wants to understand your situation as much as possible. This deep understanding allows him to support you in the best possible way within the framework given by you. He is always paying attention to your individual situation, your needs, opportunities and deficiencies. That is why when you evolve through the practice your relationship with Olivier evolves as well. Depending on the situation Olivier is a coach, mentor, listener, discussion partner, inspirational storyteller and sparring partner, just to name a few.

The goal of the collaboration with Olivier is not to become better, stronger or more flexible. Rather you are seeking more awareness within you. Throughout this process, you learn to gather more and more information about your body at the very same time (and on different layers). I remember Olivier saying: “How many things can you observe (be aware of) whilst not become distracted?” This ability to be aware of many different things going on in your body, mentally as physically, allows you to understand yourself step by step a little bit more. In the end, you are on a journey of self-discovery.

You are going to learn to pay attention to the smallest details which are happening (or not). Your goal is no longer to do as many repetitions as possible. Now, it is to reach a high quality in your practice which allows your body to interconnect, cell for cell. You are going to make your joints, ligaments, muscles intelligent in a way that your body becomes your brain. You are going to find joy to observe the smallest details whilst practising. Naturally, there is a mind-shift happening from counting towards observing. It is this observation-mode, the awakening of a long lost capability you had as a child, being curious about your environment and how it interact with your body. You become a seeker of discovering new possibilities again. And yes, it is inevitable that you are going to make progress in all sorts of aspects throughout this process in areas like mobility, strength, coordination and mindset.

It is difficult for me to pick out a specific quality of Olivier which I appreciate the most. But I admire his capability of showing himself vulnerable and deeply rooted at the same time. This environment supports me to open myself up, sharing my doubts, things I am afraid of or my success stories. We are both on different paths, our own’s, but on the same as well.

Over the last 10 months, I learned that my practice is not restricted to my practice sessions. It is infiltrating my daily life in a very positive way. An ongoing transfer is happening. My life is becoming more and more my practice, a playground of unlimited opportunities.

I am very thankful that I found in Olivier a person who supports me in this process in which I am learning to understand myself as a human being.

Learning to access the courage to allow myself to be more authentic, Mark S.

Olivier Goetgeluck has been an inspiring mentor for me. Having read about Vegetative Training I was curious and very much wanting to experience it, to learn how the wisdom of my body could help me to find more freedom, ease and open expression.

I was at first a bit skeptical about learning a practice that seemed so intimate and subtle over Skype from someone an ocean away. But the moment I met Olivier I felt he was someone I could trust implicitly, and in our ongoing sessions together I have sensed this again and again.

The sessions have been revelatory and I feel echoes of what we do more and more in my daily life. I won’t soon forget the surprising feeling of openness and ease I felt walking around and having personal interactions just after our very first online meeting.

I am learning from Olivier to access the courage to allow myself to be more authentic, to find a healthy and dynamic balance of openness and strength. In his utterly honest and quiet way Olivier has made observations about me which have almost startled me in their clarity and insight and which have been gateways to learning and growth. As we’ve continued to have sessions together our work has been branching out to include more ways of exploring the body, mind, emotions and attention.

I feel utterly safe being honest and vulnerable working with Olivier and find him to be a true beacon of wisdom and support. I feel that I can express anything to him and he will be understanding and direct in addressing my concerns. It’s galvanizing, as well, to witness someone so authentically involved with exploring his own development with focus and humility.

I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be guided by Olivier. It’s a rare privilege to have someone whom you trust and admire help you explore your potential, and for him to do so with such care, dedication and insight.

The Freedom from Within: physiotherapist's experience with Vegetative Training

Reading about Vegetative Training on Oliviers blog I got interested. I am very curious about the body, movement, therapy, etc.

Then I met Olivier at a Fighting Monkey workshop and asked him about the system/method and he explained. He gave a lot of his time and explained sincerely about the reasoning behind and that just clicked with what I already knew from my background in physiotherapy and movement.

So I started with some sessions via Skype. Via Skype? How would he teach me I wondered a bit. But I wanted to try it, feel it and embody it. About the method you can read more on his blog but some of the things I took away was: seeing the freedom in my 18 month daughter.

I know we say that kids move a lot. But the variability in their movements is huge. I can see the “same” movements I do when I go through a session, in her while she is eating, playing or relaxing. And the freedom in her body and breath. Wauw. She is shaking her head, lips and stretching without thinking about it. She is not thinking this would be good for me or I need to do this stretch my physio showed my. Her body intuitively knows what it needs. And that is something I got from vegetative training.

After a session I would find myself on the bike shaking my lips (making sounds like brrrh brrrhh). While reading a book I would, without thinking, begin to shake around my hips and pelvic area. While walking my arms are swinging a lot more freely (imagine an African man walking, I always noticed that they have very loose arms).

I've learnt to better allow these movements to come out. And when I hold them back, it is now more clear to me. So now I can be aware - and I can choose whether I allow it (and feel the freedom like a child again) or the norm of society wins.

It as a great gift and one that can be enhanced and be with me as long as walk this earth. I like that it is not Olivier who tells my what to do. Yes he instruct, but the movements come from within and with it freedom. It is hard to explain in words. It is something that one must experience in one's own body.

Old habits, injuries, inactivity, phycological processes and cultural tendencies all influence the way we move and what we express with the body. Through Vegetative Training I found some deep hidden tension no other therapist would have found. Vegetative Training as I see it is a very potent tool to tab in into self healing and self regulation of the body.

Elite runner Mads Valentin Tærsbøl on Vegetative Training

"When I first heard about Olivier, and Vegetative Training, I was curious about what it was, what it could do, and who 'that magical guy' from Belgium was. But I was also a little skeptical if it really was as good as I've read. I then started talking with a few people who've tried Vegetative Training, and I just knew that I had to give it a try myself.

The reason I tried it out in the first place was because I like the idea about the body have the 'tools' to heal itself, and recover better, instead of always going to various physiotherapist, acupunctures, kinesiologists and so on.

But the main reason behind it was that I had been struggling with a painful knee for a couple of months.

I'm an elite runner so with two daily run sessions + strength my body is really important to me, and with a bad knee I couldn't perform, and train, the way I had to do.

madsvalentin.jpg

For those couple of months I tried EVERYTHING in order to fix it, but it didn't really help....but then I had a session with Olivier and that changed everything for me and my perspective on the body.

I've now had three sessions on Skype with Olivier, and what a great experience. Despite the fact that he was in Belgium and I in Denmark, and the only thing that connected us was a computer screen, I could feel right away that this guy could do something special - or as Olivier told me:

'Your body can do something special - I'm just your guide.'

We started the session and the breathing-exercises we did were really new to me. At least since I was a little child (small children breathe like this).

Through different techniques Olivier all the time told me to think of a tree or a flower - even think about the ocean: those things 'open' and 'close' in a natural rhythm, and that's how humans should do: physically as well as mentally.

After the session we spoke a while , and the rest of the day I felt completely energized in a way I haven't felt in a long time. But the most amazing thing happened the next day: I couldn't feel anything in my knee AT ALL. So happy!!!

Since then Olivier and I spoke two more times, and I now do the breathing exercises on a weekly basis,  but they're not scheduled - cause that's the thing that's different about Vegetative Training (compared to a more standard training regime): Only do it when you feel for it due to the fact that the body/mind knows what it wants - and that's the secret to a self-healing organism: Listen closely - it will tell you everything.

Try it: I can recommend Olivier - He's a great guide/instructor, and you will really feel how passionate he is about helping people, and that's admirable.

Vegetative training is definitely something I'll continue to use, and actually it's not that weird at all:-) "

Training for longevity, Simmy Tan

simmy tan.jpg

"I am coming into my 5th month of online training with Olivier Goetgeluck. 5 months ago, I had no concept of what moving well means. While I still enjoyed my training back then, I often felt exhausted, tired, and I was constantly battling with pain and aches, I was always anxious and stressed

I knew I needed to change but I did not know where to start, although I’ve built my habit of “working out” regularly, having a coach provides the structure and the accountability I needed. By chance, I came across Olivier’s postings, I was enlightened by his blog posts, and he seem to exudes a maturity way beyond his age.

I’ve given very careful consideration upon hiring his service, not just because it is an investment, also because I know it will be completely different than what I’m used to. I was so afraid of change to be honest, but I am so glad I took the step.

Olivier has introduced many new concepts to me, far beyond what the mainstream fitness community provides. I used to follow along with the trend and just did what looks “cool”. I could never pictured myself practicing stillness let alone sticking to it, I never felt motivated to do mobility, I never wanted to take a day off and “relax”. I have to admit the shift was slow, and I took my time. Throughout the past couple of months, I’ve certainly given a lot of thought into training for longevity. I can’t quite put my finger on it, I often felt more intellectually challenged, I associate the gains I’ve made are more mental than physical.

I can’t thank you enough Olivier, I am confident and certain that I will continue to implement your teachings as I move forward in my life."

Vegetative Training taught me how to slow my life down on and off of the court, Codi Miller (pro basketball player)

"During my time in Belgium I never thought I would be taught how to do something that I have been doing my entire life.. 'Just breathe,' Olivier said to me… During the months of January and February I was going through a tough time. It finally hit me that i was in a foreign country alone and this mental frustration showed on the court as well during those months.. That was until I heard the words, 'Just breathe.'

Now I have always been conscious of the benefits of doing particular breathing techniques but I have never seen anything work as fast as the breathing and other techniques that I did with Olivier Goetgeluck.

Vegetative Training (VGT) is the name of the method. Now I still don’t know all of the science behind it but I do know after my first session I felt amazing and from that day I have been hooked to it.

After a few sessions of doing this breathing technique my spirits began to lift along with my level of play. The first three to four weeks working on breathing, in my opinion, lead me to win three MVP's in four weeks. What was most fascinating about my style of play during that time is that I was producing more but I was trying 10 times less.

The VGT taught me how to slow my life down on and off of the court and this gave me the ability to make smarter and more conscious decisions throughout my day and throughout the game. The moment I stopped trying to control everything was when I finally had the breakthrough in my game and in myeline that I knew was coming, I just didn’t know when.

I recommend anyone who wants to elevate their game no matter the sport or just someone who wants to enhance their life experience to work with Olivier Goetgeluck. He is an extremely kind, nonjudgmental and charismatic teacher. He will admit that he doesn’t have all of the answers but it will for sure seem like he does.

If you are struggling with trying to keep up to the pace that this world moves, which seems to be moving at 100% every second of the day Olivier will teach you multiple techniques on how to slow down just a little bit.

What I love about his teachings is that all we have to do is learn how to breathe properly and major changes our life will start to present themselves..

So thank you again Olivier Goetgeluck for teaching a 23 year young adult on how to breathe again."
