Warrior Guards the Mountain, Serge Augier

Fears that never manifest can still eat a lot of our energy.

Fear is the only emotion, all other emotions come from that. Love is a natural state of being, or should be, it is not an emotion. When we feel "in love" it is mostly sickness coming from fear of dying or loneliness or pain.

I should do all of my training in a slightly messy way since it was closer to the reality of life.

Do it during any periods of free time.

We want to develop the body, the energy and the mind.

Body: good health through exercises for relaxation, strength and rooting.

Energy circulation: three stage - to realise the internal feelings, to mobilise the will and to make natural and conscious exchanges.

Mind: to see who we really are through three stages - observation of the self, observation of the world, and having global perception.

All the practical application of the teaching must go in the direction of relaxing the body, to allow energy to circulate or bring peace to the mind.

Eight principles

1. Principle of alignment - awakening of conscience

We look for attention to our manner of breathing, position, manner of walking, how we take a shower, at what moment we are stretched, at what moment we are relaxed, what our sensations at every instant are.

Exercise of holding our space: try to occupy the maximum space possible with our back, chest and shoulders, instead of remaining shrunken like a scared animal.

The only way to understand the theory is to practise without cessation.

2. Principle of non-resistance - a passive activity

To stop taking ourselves so seriously, to stop being so important, and once again you will have to relax.

3. Principle of balance - stability in movement

Physical balance before mental balance.

Energy can only circulate in the absence of either physical or emotional balance.

The happy medium: take a rest before work, to relax in order to be receptive.

We explore the excess and the extreme so that we can find the stability of the centre better.

4. Principle of breathing - the exchange with the world around us

Two main sources of acquirement of energy: breathing and food.

The test of voice: expression of our fears and frustrations.

One can play on the emotions by the means of breath control.

5. Principle of natural cycles - maturation of teaching

We must allow time for time.

Two types of control: emotional will (young monkey; understanding to regulate), intentional will (focus the attention).

6. Principle of intention - live in the present

To train in a deep manner is to take the being's totality in consideration and therefore to work on several planes: physical, mental and spiritual.

To train deeply we need the intention to make it here and now and not the intention 'to win' anything.

To train in a superficial way is to imitate some exercises without the intention of the moment but with the idea to 'get something.'

To participate superficially is to just 'participate' in the world; whereas to practise in depth is to 'invest' in the world. It is not to just 'be there' but it is to be completely present.

7. Principle of development - increasing energy

To increase energy it is better not to waste what we already have.

It is a simple practice which amounts to not accumulating stress, or at least only the minimum.

We need to learn how not to spend too much energy in the use of the five senses.

8. Principle of evolution - towards a different ethic

Timing will not come from form, but form will make you move better and have more mobility.

Play is the vital factor to develop timing.

The teacher must train more that the students, if not, he will not progress.

Three stages of evolution within the training:

developing the structure

learning the forms

acquiring freedom

~ triple I

Actually what we do is to feed more knowledge to our natural being, and as soon as it is digested our natural being can express itself.

We train for openness of the joints, softness of the muscles and strength of the tendons.

In Chinese medicine the emotions are considered the first disease.

The real thing is the experience of life, and the exercises we do give us experiences.

Some people say that only what you feel is real, but maybe this feeling was due to tension or sickness.

First we must bring the body to balance. By balancing the mind and body then we can listen to what we feel.

You cannot choose, life happens.

Without a goal your life will be good. You are just melted into things. Between hitting people as a martial artist and curing people as a doctor, I still have to walk, sit and breathe - this is life!

The practice must fuse you with life, it is not a ritual.

Our practice is complete because we train qualities, how to breathe and walk, to make the body strong. Practice must melt us into life.

Train qualities, not techniques.

You start to see that there is nothing you can really do to help people except to simply be there for them. If people are very sad no need to do anything. Is it cruel? It is just reality, only they can help themselves, and we can just be there.

Any Way that you do diligently and daily will succeed.

First you make the arms and legs strong and then you make the centre strong.

Emotional training: emotion is a big wave and we learn how to surf.

Fear is the only emotion, all other emotions come from that. Love is a natural state of being, or should be, it is not an emotion. When we feel "in love" it is mostly sickness coming from fear of dying or loneliness or pain.

If a student does not ask me questions and talk to me, then I cannot help him. If he is honest, I can help him.

Manipulate each toe individually. Train toes like fingers.

The fruit monk

When asked how to find enlightenment he said, 'Are you honest?'

When asked how to be successful he replied, 'Are you honest?'

He had the habit of taking with him wherever he went two spiral cones of iron, each weighing 20kg which he continuously rubbed and pressed.
